![]() So, Wilmarth goes off to Vermont to investigate, where he’s picked up at the train depot by a mysterious character named P.F. Then the farmer’s son, George Akeley (Joe Sofranko) visits the professor, imploring him to help them with the “hill creatures” and even offering photographic proof of their existence. He has also been receiving a series of letters from a Vermont farmer named Henry Akeley (Barry Lynch), who claims he has seen the creatures all around his house. He has just uncovered a manuscript called “Tales of the Old Ones” that includes references to “a hidden race of monstrous beings” said “to lurk somewhere in the remoter hills” of Vermont. They keep a straight face throughout the movie, doing it as poker-faced as they can (but obviously enjoying themselves in process).Īnyway, things begin with our meeting the main character, Albert Wilmarth (Matt Foyer), a professor in the English Department of Miskatonic University, Arkam, Massachusetts, a man who specializes in folklore. ![]() ![]() The motto of the HPLHS is “Ludo Fore Putavimus” (“We thought it would be fun”), perhaps parodying Charles Foster Kane’s famous line in “Citizen Kane” when he says, “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.” It also indicates they probably don’t take much of this stuff too seriously, even though they never play any of the film for laughs. Judging by “The Whisperer in Darkness,” I’d say they came closer to succeeding than most anyone else, although the film may not appeal to every modern horror-movie or sci-fi buff. The filmmakers at the HPLHS have tried to be as true to Lovecraft as they could in their films, attempting to replicate the tone and feeling as well as the dialogue, costumes, and settings of the original stories. Needless to say, movies need solid imagery, so filmmakers have often resorted to making up a lot of the visuals that Lovecraft merely implied, and suddenly, when audiences actually saw these things on screen, the pictorial representations didn’t always match their imagination. As a result, readers conjured up in their minds horrific landscapes, creatures, monsters, and gods that Lovecraft never actually described in much detail on the page. While I admit it’s been over fifty years since I last read a Lovecraft tale (I was quite a fan in high school), I remember the stories being more atmospheric than they were action oriented, more subjective than objective Lovecraft intimated, suggested, insinuated more than he showed. Many filmmakers have tried and many have failed. It was then released on DVD and Blu-ray in early 2012.Now, here’s the thing: Lovecraft has long been a favorite horror, fantasy, and science-fiction writer among followers of the genre, but his stories haven’t always translated well into movies. The Whisperer in Darkness did not have a theatrical release but appeared at dozens of film festivals in over a dozen countries. Pasadena City College is used for interior scenes of the school. The filmmakers used Mount Holyoke College to represent Miskatonic University. Regarding the introduction of a biplane, Leman commented, "If you have monsters that fly, you have to have a dogfight with a biplane." Cast The characters of Wilmarth's three friends at Miskatonic University were developed from Call of Cthulhu role-playing characters created years before by Branney, Leman, and a friend. Branney and Leman intended to make Wilmarth's world "more emotionally complicated" because Hannah's future caused him to be "invested in more than just himself". The character of Hannah and opening of gate to Yuggoth were introduced in order to " a good movie". From a dramatic standpoint, Lovecraft's story brought the writers through what would be "Act Two" of a standard movie structure and felt incomplete. ![]() This differs from the original story in which Wilmarth flees in the middle of the night and safely returns to Arkham.Īccording to Sean Branney on the making-of featurette "The Whisperer Behind the Scenes," Lovecraft was better at set-ups than endings. His escape is unsuccessful and at the end of the film the audience discovers that Wilmarth has been narrating from a machine attached to the cylinder in which his brain now resides. He foils the plot with the help of Hannah, the child of one of the collaborators. In the third act, the protagonist, Wilmarth, uncovers an attempt by cultists to open a gateway between Yuggoth and Earth. For the first two acts, the plot follows the short story. The Alert system's cameras are bigger than the Dropcam HD's little puck, but both require a holder, so the size issue may be moot for all but the most stealthy of installations. That's for the Windows PC on the network only, unless you upgrade to the Alert Web and Mobile Commander service mentioned earlier then you can watch recorded video anywhere. Unlike with Dropcam's mobile app, you can't watch stored video on the phone. That said, the video was subject to a lot of buffering delay when the handset wasn't on Wi-Fi. I saw a nice 640-by-480-pixel video that is essentially streaming from the camera to the router and out to the Internet. I tested with an AT&T iPhone 4 and the app worked flawlessly. That is a feature unique to the Dropcam HD. There's a microphone on the camera so you can listen to what you see, but no speaker, so there's no talking back to whoever you're spying on. Even in what humans would think is pure inky blackness, the lens can witness plenty. The 750n camera, like the outdoor-focused 750e and competitor Dropcam HD, sees very well in the dark. $79.95), which is much cheaper than adding new 700n cameras to Logitech Alert. In comparison, the Dropcam HD features great motion capture, but doesn't have a fast forward for playback the Avaak VueZone System ($199.95, 4 stars) includes a motion detection camera, but when you buy additional cameras you pay a bit extra to get a camera with motion detection built in ($99.95 vs. Fortunately, you can fast forward at up to 8x speed if there's a lot to see. You can also sit and watch the real-time video feed, or use Playback mode to skip through to the captured sections whenever motion was detected. In this case, only motion video is captured, which saves on disk space. You can also set up zones of view to monitor for motion, so you don't get an alert just because a ceiling fan is spinning. Luckily, you can throttle down both the sensitivity and the timing, so you're not inundated with messages. However, it's only 960-by-720-pixel video running at 15 frames per second-not exactly full motion, but sufficient nonetheless.Įmail alerts can be sent by the software whenever motion is detected. Playback is very good, with no buffering problems. (Additional interior cameras, Alert 700n models, identical to the 750n but sans the dongle for your router are $229.99 each.)The video you record from each camera is stored locally on the camera or your hard drive. You can control up to six Alert cameras at a time. The heart of the system is the Logitech Alert Commander software, which runs on a Windows system on your network. You can also manage the entire system this way, or even share clips and control multiple sites that have the Alert software installed. However, you can subscribe to the optional Logitech Web and Mobile Commander service for $80 a year to watch recorded video on your phone or a remote PC. If you're mobile, using an Android, iOS, or BlackBerry device, real-time viewing is always free with an app download, but that's it. You could pay for the Logitech Alert cameras and that's it-local DVR recordings cost you nothing. The only free option for cloud storage with Logitech Alert is to follow Logitech's directions to backup video to DropBox (Opens in a new window). And you can't plug into a power strip or a UPS-they prevent network signals from reaching your interior wiring and using the power lines like Ethernet cables.Īll of this is in contrast to the Wi-Fi-based Dropcam HD ($149 direct, 4 stars), which stores all video data in the cloud. However, Alert cameras use HomePlug to access your home network, so a nearby open AC outlet is required. Thanks to the included mounting accessory hardware, which even includes a suction cup option, you can put the cameras just about anywhere, from wall to ceiling. Overall, the system offers an easy way to see what's going on at home when you're not there, even in the dark of night, and is our new Editors' Choice for surveillance cameras. Plus, the indoor and outdoor systems are entirely compatible on the software end, so you can mix and match them, with up to six cameras on one network. The camera lacks weather-proofing, but costs $50 less. The major difference is that the new Alert 750n Indoor Master System ($299.99 list) is, if you can't guess, for indoor use. Logitech's latest set of home-surveillance cameras build admirably on the existing Alert 750e Outdoor Master System ($349.99, 4 stars). Boondocking is a convenient way to save money while you’re in between destinations. RV YouTubers Drivin’ and Vibin‘ offer some of their best tips in the video below.įree camping for one night is usually pretty simple. These campsites are located along most secondary roads on BLM lands and may not always be marked. Generally, your stay on public lands is limited to 14 days. If you’re looking to get away from the crowds in forests, beaches, and more, this is for you! The United States Bureau of Land Management allows boondocking (referred to as “dispersed camping”) on most public lands as long as it doesn’t conflict with other authorized uses or isn’t specifically closed to camping. Some of the most popular boondocking locations are undeveloped or primitive campsites on public lands. Let’s take a look at three types of boondocking locations. There are many places across the country that allow RV boondocking. You might see this also described as “dry camping”, “dispersed camping”, or simply “free camping”. Boondocking for RVers is often just staying overnight in the parking lot of an RV-friendly business. While this may sometimes be the case, boondocking doesn’t always mean going too far from civilization. ![]() The word might instantly conjure up images of parking down a dark, forest road on open land. I like the mission structure in Nioh, it works well for the game and lets me replay cool missions and bosses whenever I like. Let Dark Souls/Sekiro have their big open world. Game is still mission based, which is good. A normal demon enemy seems about as complex as an average Sekiro miniboss. ![]() Enemy attacks are quite varied and numerous like in the first game (the hammer demons jump all over the place and do multiple attack combos and grabs, snakes have 3 different ranged attacks, one of which paralyzes you, several melee strikes and a grab). A lot of reused enemies from the 1st game (human soldiers, red horned demons, skeletons, zombies, slimes) but also a lot of new ones - really fast and agile human dual axe wielders, big one legged hammer demons, snake demons, little goblin things that become big if they take a bite out of you with their grab attack or eat another enemy's corpse, weird giant slugs with human faces. However, they look nicer - the outdoor village area is in full daylight as opposed to nighttime when 90% of the outdoor Nioh 1 levels take place, and the cave has a lot of interesting structures like shrines, idols and other cool looking things that make parts of it look distinct. Area design is very similar to the 1st game so far - half of the first level is an outdoor village/fortification and the second half is a burning village where you run around on roofs dropping down water buckets on open fires the 2nd level is a cave dungeon. Graphics are very similar but areas look nicer with better lighting and everything has a bit more detail to it. Personally I'm glad that it's still Nioh and they didn't try to turn it into Sekiro 1.5 or someshit. It's a lot like the 1st game, maybe too much, which can be a determent to some people. Watched it at work, some thoughts/observations: There's a 3 hour long gameplay stream of the first 2 missions on twitch. ![]() And affects also real macs running Yosemite. And the developer promises that it will always be available for free (though he does accept PayPal donations on his site). MagicPrefs is perfect example of software making hardware better. There is also a setting to increase or decrease the touch sensitivity of the device. With MagicPrefs, you also get the ability to improve the Mighty Mouse tracking speed by up to 200%. This is especially a problem for users with the new 27″ iMacs (which come with the Magic Mouse) and/or two monitors (that’s a lot of screen real estate to cover). A number of users have complained that the tracking speed on the Magic Mouse is too slow, even at the fastest setting. It’s so natural, and makes so much sense, that I’m even more dumbfounded as to why Apple wouldn’t just build some of these gestures into the device’s software (and I suspect they will in the future via updates).Īnd there’s actually more. I now have easy access to things such as Expose, Dashboard, and Spaces right from the Mighty Mouse. Still, after playing around with all the actions and finding the ones that I like and am comfortable using, MagicPrefs is extremely powerful. Even an obvious action like two-finger click is hard to use because most people will have two fingers resting on the mouse at all times, and when they do a left or right click, the multi-touch top senses the other finger’s presence and will think you’re doing a two-finger click. In my experience with the program, it’s a pretty good idea to follow these recommendations and stay away from the harder to use ones. It’s important to note that a number of actions in both the Swipes and Drag,Pinch, etc areas are labeled with a “*,” meaning they are “potentially hard to use.” There are also some of the Clicks & Taps functions that have this warning. Another allows you to tap logo to enable something. Two options allow you to drag your finger from the logo left or right to enable some action. Interestingly, there are also options for the Apple logo near the bottom of the Magic Mouse. Similar options also exist for swipes (wiping you fingers across the top of the Magic Mouse, and pinching (pushing two fingers together on the top of the device or pushing them apart). Clicking on the checkbox to enable any of these also shows you a picture of exactly how the function works on the Magic Mouse. There are also all of those options and then some for “taps” which is essentially touching the top of the Magic Mouse without clicking on it. MagicPrefs has options that allow you to set actions for two-finger clicks, three-finger clicks, four-finger clicks, and one-finger middle axis clicks. Clicks & Taps are the ones that are likely to be most useful to you, as they’re the ones that are the easiest to use, and get use to. It gives you a boatload of new multi-touch options for your Magic Mouse, broken into three main categories: Clicks & Taps, Swipes, and Drag, Pinch, etc. ![]() MagicPrefs, which is made by developer Vlad Alexa, is a free piece of software that runs in the background once you start it up. (And yes, it’s fully multi-touch capable.) A new third-party program called MagicPrefs, enables all the multi-touch capabilities you could ever want for the device - and even some you likely don’t. Apple gave its new mouse multi-touch capabilities, but only takes advantage of a fraction of what it can do. Back in November, I wrote up a review of the new Magic Mouse, noting that it was “ Apple’s best mouse ever, but…” Essentially, the problem is a software one. ![]() ![]() “Find” something better, you’ll be better off for it. The not-so-good news is that none of them, in my opinion, are as refined and intuitive as the one and only TotalFinder. As mentioned, the good news is that there is no shortage of decent alternatives to TotalFinder. So several months ago, I bit the bullet, removed TotalFinder, and began searching for a suitable replacement. Personally, I don’t mind hacking stuff, but these days there just isn’t enough time to fiddle with OS mods, especially where potential security implications are concerned. So to run TotalFinder on Mac OS X, you need to disable SIP, which obviously is not recommended by Apple. In other words: El Capitan’s SIP breaks TotalFinder. That’s good, but unfortunately it prevents TotalFinder from augmenting Finder. System Integrity Protection (SIP) is a new security feature introduced by Apple. Okay so first, technically TotalFinder will work on OS X 10.11 (aka, El Capitan), but only after disabling OS X’s built-in System Integrity Protection: Fortunately there are plenty of decent alternatives to TotalFinder, even if you’re running the latest version of Mac OS X. Unfortunately, as explained in my rant about things that suck about Mac, TotalFinder no longer is compatible with Mac 10.11+. Mac’s native Finder enables users to navigate and manage their files, similar in concept to Windows File Explorer. For years, I enjoyed the advanced Finder functionality provided by BinaryAge’s excellent app, TotalFinder. ![]() The Virus Chest stores the detected threats that are quarantined with details such as threat name, infected file, original location, and date found.
